Employee Sick and Vacation Leave

Purpose:

To define full-time employee sick and vacation leave

Revision Responsibility: President

Responsible Executive Office: President

Revised: August 5, 2009, August 6, 2014 to include updates to Employee Handbook, June 7, 2016 to change title of Policy from "Employee Leave" to "Employee Paid Time Off" and to eliminate full-time faculty and full-time staff leave, breaks, and vacation requirements; replaced with paid time off (PTO) information from Employee Handbook, Revision for January 1, 2024 in accordance with Colorado employment law changes.

Holidays

Platt College recognizes and is closed on the following holidays.  Faculty and staff are paid for the holidays upon becoming a regular full-time employee.  Part-time employees are not eligible for holiday pay.

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Friday after Thanksgiving Day
  • (Christmas Day and New Year’s Day occur during the Winter Break. Other religious affiliation holidays may be negotiated.)

Note: Students continue to have clinical if they are scheduled during these times.

Employee Sick and Vacation Leave

Accrued sick leave accrues at six (6) hours per month from the start of an eligible employee hire date. Sick leave accrues 6 hours per month with a maximum of six (6) days or 48 hours. If the maximum of six (6) days has been met then no more time will accrue until days are used. Once time below six (6) days is used, sick leave will begin to accrue again at a rate of six (6) hours a month until the maximum of six (6) days is reached again.

Vacation time is awarded annually on January 1. The days granted are listed below. See vacation leave for full-time faculty and full-time staff.

Full-Time Employee Bereavement

Full-time employees are granted up to 3 days off for a death in the immediate family. If the employee is responsible for funeral arrangements, additional time may be granted at the discretion of the President. The three (3) days of bereavement do not count as vacation or sick leave.

Jury Duty

The College believes that jury duty is a civic obligation. Therefore, The College allows time off to fulfill this obligation according to the following provisions:

All full-time employees should notify the appropriate administrator as far in advance of the court appearance as possible to allow for scheduling requirements.  Employees need to submit a jury form demonstrating participation. Jury duty does not count as vacation or sick leave.

Time off for personal court appearances will not be paid unless it is taken from available leave.

College or Individual in Official Capacity Named

In any case in which Platt College or an individual employee in his or her official capacity is named as a party in a civil proceeding, accepted service must be immediately reported to the college President. In the event that the President is not available, the Chief Financial Officer should be contacted.

Individual Named for Actions Outside Official Responsibility

An individual should accept service if the individual is named in a civil action and money damages sought from the individual for actions taken outside the scope of his or her official responsibility. In cases of this nature, the individual should immediately contact the President. (See Policy 04:04:00 Service as Process as Parties in Civil Cases
